Jesper Kikkenborg works with the sea as a co-creator in his art. In the summer of 2025, he created and developed Ferrotide – an artistic practice in which the sea play an active role in creating the work.
He has a background as marine biologist and has worked for many years as a professional diver, including as an underwater cameraman on television and film productions in Denmark and abroad.
In 2012, his underwater footage was presented at the World Expo in South Korea. This became a turning point towards art. His work includes, among other projects, being part of the underwater camera team filming bowhead whales beneath the Arctic ice for the film The Arctic Giant (IMDB) and participating as an external adviser on the recent BBC production The Blue Planet.
Today, much of his practice is dedicated to creating artworks in which the sea becomes a co-creator, allowing its natural processes to become part of the artwork itself.
At the heart of his work is the idea that we are not separate from nature, we are it. The sea is a place where you lose control and step away from the centre. You naturally become part of something greater than yourself.
This idea runs through his art, exploring time, change, and our relationship with the natural world - how much do we control?
This ranges from his Ferrotide series, where natural processes on the seabed become part of the artwork, to oil paintings created underwater, shaped by currents, movement and light.
